  Mole Removal
Although a thin very small mole on the lip or chin may be appreciated as beauty spot, it may grow big, thick, elevated, and may also grow hair. Some patients have really big birth marks requiring treatment for cosmetic considerations. If you have one or more moles or birth mark which look bad, they can be easily removed to give you a better look. Majority of the moles can be removed in a couple of minutes using LASERs or RADIOSURGERY. The other option is surgical removal.

A quick look at your queries...

AM I THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR MOLE REMOVAL SURGERY ?

Any patient with any number of moles or any size of mole can undergo the procedure. The results are better if you have a thin fair skin without a tendency to tan quickly.

WHAT ARE THE UNCERTAINTIES AND RISKS ?

A mole could recur as a very small dot if a few cells, invisible to the naked eye, are left behind. It may require a repeat treatment.

Scar is the basic prerequisite for healing of the skin. Any skin injury would necessarily result in a scar. Although best efforts are made to minimize a scar, it cannot be totally avoided. Though most patients don't leave behind visible scars, you have to be cautious if you have thick oily skin with tendency to tan or keloidal tendency. The possibility of scarring is higher if the mole is deep, large and at a site without skin redundancy.

LASER or RADIOSURGERY may leave behind a brownish, slightly depressed scar like that after pimples or chicken pox. Surgical excision and suturing would result in a fine linear scratch like scar.

If you follow your surgeon's instructions closely, like avoiding a sun exposure for a specified duration, in all probability you would not get visible scarring.

HOW DO I PLAN MY SURGERY ?

Like majority of the patients, it may be possible for you to have your mole removed during your first consultation itself.  Dr. Patankar would discuss the procedure and the expected end result in detail with you.

HOW DO I PREPARE MYSELF FOR SURGERY ?

Majority of the mole removal procedures won't require any special preparation. However, if your birth mark is large in size and is going to require an operative procedure like skin grafting, you may be asked to get certain blood tests done. In such a case, the surgery would be scheduled at a mutually convenient date.

HOW LONG WOULD I NEED TO STAY IN THE HOSPITAL?

Most of the procedures would take only a few minutes and the patient can leave immediately after the procedure. If you are going to require a major surgery like skin grafting, you may come in the morning and leave in the evening.

IS THE SURGERY PAINFUL?

Most of the procedures can be done under local anesthesia. You may be asked to apply an anesthetic cream for some time before the procedure. Or else a small injection of local anesthesia would suffice. A major procedure for a large birth mark may require general anesthesia in which case you would sleep through the procedure.

WHAT IS THE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE USED ?

Majority of the moles can be removed by using LASER. The LASER can evaporate the pigmented cells. The LASER may require more than one sitting to complete the treatment.

The LASER are now being replaced by the latest technique of RADIOSURGERY. It gives result in one sitting and just takes a few seconds to treat one mole. It has a better precision, less scarring and better cosmetic result.
If the lesions are large, a surgical option may be considered in the form excision and linear primary suturing or serial excision or excision and skin grafting.

In surgical procedure the birth mark is surgically removed. The wound can be closed by putting very fine stitches through the skin. This would leave behind a thin scratch like linear scar.

If the birth mark is too big to be removed in one go, it may be removed in stages. In the first surgery, majority of the lesion would be removed and skin sutured. Within 3 to 6 months, the surrounding skin would stretch, expand and relax. And then the remaining birth mark and the scar of first surgery both removed together. The skin is again sutured with fine sutures and the end result would be a single thin linear scar.

If the birth mark is too big, you may require surgical excision and skin grafting. In this procedure, the birth mark is excised and the area is covered with a thin layer of skin from thigh or arm.

WHAT CARE DO I NEED TO TAKE AFTER THE SURGERY ?

After RADIOSURGERY or LASER, you are allowed to wash your skin normally with soap and water. You usually won't need to take any medications. The small wound on the skin would heal in 10 to 15 days. You would not require any dressings. You would be asked to apply some antiseptic cream a few times a day.

In case of surgical excision, you may have a dressing for a couple of days. You would be asked not to wet the area for 4-5 days. The sutures are usually removed after 5 to 10 days.

A skin graft may require a dressing and immobilization for up to 3 weeks. You may be advised to wear a pressure garment for a few months to smoothen the skin graft.

WHEN CAN I RESUME MY DAILY ACTIVITIES AND JOIN MY DUTIES ?

You may carry on with your daily activities immediately after the LASER or RADIOSURGERY. You may not be able to apply make up over the treated area for up to 3 weeks. You would be advised to protect the area from sunlight for about 3 months.

YOUR NEW LOOK

With the help of latest technologies like LASER and RADIOSURGERY, you can easily get rid of unwanted moles and birth marks. If you follow your doctors instructions closely, like most patients, you would not get any visible scarring. And even if you were to develop some scar, in all probability it would be very minimal and much less visible than the original mole or birth mark. With the right expectations, mole removal would be a very simple and rewarding procedure for you.
