IS THE SURGERY PAINFUL ?

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia along with oral or intravenous analgesic - sedatives.
You will be awake during the surgery but relaxed and insensitive to pain. You can enjoy your favourite music during the surgery or have a chat with a surgeon.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE USED ?
The older technique of punch grafts or macro grafts is not used any more. The surgery technique of hair transplant is used today is called FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) or Micro Hair Transplant.

A strip of a hair is taken out from the back of the head. The adjacent scalp is transferred to stitch the wound. Thus it leaves no patch of skin without hair at the back of the head and the suture line is invisible in the hair.
The stip of skin with hair is taken out superficially, staying just under the hair roots and damaging them. The fascia, muscle, scull and brain are all far deeper and hence the procedure can cause no problems like headache etc.

This procedure take about half an hour and then the patient is sent back to room. The surgical team would continue to dissect slits, follicular units and single follicle grafts in the operating room.

Once this is almost done, the patient is back into the operating room and local anesthesia administered for the recipient area. Small puncture marks are made in the scalp in between the existing hair and new hair are inserted into the puncture with its root intact. The new hair inserted is not sutured in place but gets stuck in place with blood clot. Distribution of hair and their direction of insertion is controlled to give most natural aesthetic look.

Whole procedure can take anywhere from two hours up to 8 hours depending on the magnitude of the procedure and the patient can go home without any tracings.

A quick look at your queries...

AM I THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY ?

Surgery to correct baldness can be performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age. The best candidates for surgery have early male pattern baldness with no skin infection.

Surgery would be discouraged for men with extreme baldness and who have unrealistic expectation to restore near normal hair growth. However individuals with moderate baldness can certainly undergo the procedure. Also, individuals who have skin infections, autoimmune disorders or are having significant active hair loss are usually not considered good candidates for surgery. The patients may be advised to start medical treatment to cure skin disease like dandruff and to control active hair loss before  the surgery is considered an option.

Hair transplant works equally well both, in males and females. Especially reduced density of hair in front or along the parting line can be nicely covered with hair grafting.

Areas of localized baldness following scarring due to an injury or burns can be treated effectively with hair transplant. However baldness due to alopecia aerata is a contraindication.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY ?

Hair transplant is the only procedure which can offer naturally growing hair in a bald area. All other procedures offer artificial threads to mimic hair growth. They are like modified wigs.

Hair bonding / weaving employs tartificial threads / human hair woven into a net and applied to the bald area as a patch. It could be stuck to the scalp with glue or clipped to the adjacent hair and caused them to be lost. This causes progressive hair loss and is called "traction alopecia".

Bio fibre technique uses hypo allergenic synthetic fibres which are inserted into the skin under local anesthesia. This gives and excellent initial look but about 10~30 % fibres are lost annually may need replacement.

Mesotherapy employs giving some injections into the scalp to promote hair growth. This minimizes the further hair loss and increases the density. This is good technique for mild hair loss but has limitation in case of total bald patch. It may be combined with topical applications like minoxidil and anti - testosteron drugs like fine stride.

WHAT ARE THE UNCERTAINTIES AND RISKS ?

When male hair transplant surgery is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and quite minor.
Although certain risks which are common to any surgery like infection, unpredictable scarring, bleeding, hematoma, seroma, adverse reaction to anesthesia, are extremely rare.

HOW DO I PLAN MY SURGERY ?

The initial consultation with your surgeon is very important. Your surgeon will need your complete medical history, so check your own records ahead of time and be ready to provide this information. First, our surgeon will examine your scalp and check for causes of the hair loss, such as scalp infections like dandruff, testicular or the endocrine malfunction, use of estrogen-containing medications, or anaolic steroids, If a medical problem is the suspected  cause, you'll treated for the same before considering surgery. However in most of the cases there is no specific cause that c an be pinpointed  or baldness may be hereditary, and is called androgenic alopecia. You may be asked to get basic pathology tests to rule out any other problem.

If you are suffering from active hair loss,  you may be suggested to start certain medications to minimize it.

HOW DO I PREPARE MYSELF FOR SURGERY ?

Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating, drinking , and taking certain vitamins and medications.

Smokers should plan to stop smoking for minimum of one or two weeks before surgery and during recovery. Smoking decreases circulation and interferes with proper healing. Therefore, it is essential to follow all your surgeon's instructions.

You may be asked to take a head wash with antiseptic shampoo prescribed by your doctor one day before the surgery.

HOW LONG WOULD I NEED TO STAY IN THE HOSPITAL ?

The surgery is usually done on an out patient basis, most of the patients can leave the hospital within an hour after the surgery.

CAN WE USE OUR BODY HAIR FROM REGIONS OTHER THAN OCCIPITAL FOR HAIR TRANSPLANT ?

Although we can use hair from other body areas like pubic hair or chest hair, the commonest source is Occipital region, because of its excellent density of hair. However, if the patient insist on using body hair for transfer, we can use FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique for the same.

WHAT CARE DO I NEED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE AFTER THE SURGERY ?

There can be swelling and bruising on the fore head which would subside at the most in three to five days.

You should avoid touching the operated area for 2~3 weeks. Head wash and shampooing is allowed only there after. Hence it would be advisable to avoid hot, humid, dusty climate for 3 weeks.

In the meanwhile, you would be prescribed an antiseptic spray to keep your scalp clean.

WHEN CAN I RESUME MY DAILY ACTIVITIES AND JOIN MY DUTIES ?

Most of the patients can get back to work on the same or the next day after surgery. Usually there is no need for you to take leave.

You could use a cap immediately after surgery; just need to take care so as not to disturb transplanted hair.

Stitches at the back of the head would dissolve in about 1 to 2 weeks following the procedure. Your surgeon may advise you to avoid heavy exercises for about three weeks.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT OR SEE NEW HAIR GROWTH ?

The implanted hairs are just about a mm in length when implanted. They start growing in about 2 to 3 months and one sees an excellent growth in about 6 to 8 months.

WHAT CARE DO I NEED TO TAKE IN LONG TERM?  COULD I LOOSE THE THE IMPLANTED HAIR AGAIN ?

The transplanted hairs are never lost even with advancing age. The reason is the source of these hairs. Hairs at the back of the head have longevity similar to our life span. An elderly person, whatever his age would always have at least a crescent of hair at the back of the head. When these hair are transferred up front, the roots carry hair properties and hence are permanent.  These hair would never be lost even at old age.

Because these hairs carry their own properties, they tend to grow thick and long similar to the hair at the back of the head unlike thin and stunted growth on recipient area.

YOUR NEW LOOK

The young patients suffering from baldness may suffer from inferiority complex. The results of the procedure are significant and permanent. Most of the patients appreciate not just the enhanced look but the changed personality in general. They are prepared to face the world with new self confidence.
